Phase II of the Yangtze-to-Huaihe River Diversion Project is a follow-up and supporting project to the previous main project. It also serves as an important water source, water conveyance channel and storage component for the water diversion project serving northern Anhui.

After completion, the project is intended to support water-source replacement in 28 counties(cities and districts) in northern Anhui and contribute to the sustainable development of the local economy and society.

Solution Overview

Water Diversion Pumping for Mengcheng, Guoyang and Lixin Waterworks

Shanghai Liancheng (Group) Co., Ltd. undertook the water diversion gate projects for Mengcheng, Guoyang and Lixin Waterworks, supplying double-suction centrifugal pump units selected and engineered for the required flow, head and operating conditions at each site.

Project Background

Phase II of the Yangtze-to-Huaihe River Diversion Project

The main construction scope includes the Mengcheng Station Project, the Mengcheng Waterworks Diversion Gate Project, the Guoyang Waterworks Diversion Gate Project and theLixin Waterworks Diversion Gate Project.

Mengcheng Station is the first station on the Wohe River route of Phase II. Its mainfunction is to lift water stored upstream of Bengbu Gate on the Huaihe River through the Wohe River from Mengcheng Station to the upstream side of Mengcheng Gate, helping secureindustrial and agricultural water use along the route above Mengcheng Gate.

At Mengcheng, Guoyang and Lixin, newly built water intakes and pressurizing stations connect the diversion gates with the river. Together with existing or planned water conveyance works, the river water is distributed to the relevant waterworks, forming acomplete urban and rural water supply system.

Project Schedule

The project documentation states a contract value of RMB 884 million, a total service period of 36 months and a construction period of 30 months. The project officially started on October 7, 2023. Under the original schedule, completion was planned forFebruary 2026.

Hydraulic Design

Project-Specific Hydraulic Model and Multi-Condition Analysis

For this project, Liancheng’s high-efficiency double-suction pumps were developed from an advanced hydraulic model and matched to the specified project parameters. Multiple operating conditions were calculated and then simulated and analyzed using three-dimensional flow technology.

The relevant parameters were balanced to achieve an appropriate match among the geometricparameters, resulting in a project-specific hydraulic model designed for high efficiency, a broad high-efficiency operating range and good cavitation performance.

The impeller uses a staggered-blade design to reduce pressure pulsation and make thewater flow more stable.

Thick-Shaft Design

The thick-shaft design shortens the span between the bearings and improves shaft stiffness, helping reduce pump vibration and support smoother operation.

Mechanical Verification

Stress and Thermal Analysis for Key Pump Components

Mechanical analysis was carried out using SOLIDWORKS simulation. The model was loaded, locations of maximum stress were identified, stress analysis was performed, and thermal analysis was carried out at the bearing positions.

These analyses were used to make the design of the impeller, volute, rotor and bearing positions more reasonable and reliable, helping ensure the strength and service life of components under both normal and worst-case operating conditions specified for the project.

Testing & Quality Control

Rotor Dynamic Balancing and Factory Acceptance

Dynamic balancing tests were carried out on the pump rotor components. The test accuracy was controlled to balance quality grade 2.5 in accordance withGB/T 9239.1-2006, as specified in the project documentation.

The pump equipment for the Mengcheng and Lixin Waterworks diversion gate projects passed factory acceptance. According to the original project report, its performance fully metthe customer’s requirements and received strong recognition from the relevant departmentsof the Yangtze-to-Huaihe River Diversion Project.

Project Delivery

Guoyang Equipment Supply Completed by the End of 2023

The equipment for the Guoyang Waterworks diversion gate project was supplied by the end of2023. In December 2023, Shanghai Liancheng received a thank-you letter from the Constructionand Management Office of the Jiangshui North Transmission Project of Anhui Water DiversionProject Co., Ltd.

The letter recognized the completion of the Guoyang Waterworks diversion gate equipmentsupply target with the required quality and quantity.

A Project-Specific Pumping Solution for Water Diversion Infrastructure

For the Mengcheng, Guoyang and Lixin Waterworks diversion gate projects, Liancheng combined site-specific pump selection, multi-condition hydraulic analysis, structural simulation, rotor dynamic balancing and factory acceptance to meet the specified operating requirements of Phase II of the Yangtze-to-Huaihe River Diversion Project.
