Radiant barrier is a reflective, perforated material installed in the attic that blocks radiant heat before it enters the living space, reducing the load on a home’s HVAC system. ROAM installs the material using the foil-stapled-to-rafters method, a configuration tested by Oak Ridge National Laboratory under the U.S. Department of Energy.
The laboratory’s study, which modeled Austin, Texas summer conditions, found that the foil-stapled-to-rafters method reduced summer heat flow into the attic by 49.8% compared to an attic without a radiant barrier. The test attic in that study did not include HVAC ductwork, a feature common in most Texas homes, which suggests the real-world impact for a typical Central Texas home could be greater than the lab results indicate.
ROAM recently completed a radiant barrier installation for a homeowner in Belton who had initially contacted the company about a storm-damaged roof and separately asked whether anything could be done about a rising electric bill. Using an infrared thermometer, ROAM measured the home’s attic temperature at 126°F on a 93-degree day before installation. After installation, the same attic measured 91-92°F on a 95-degree day.
“That’s a real, measurable difference, on the same home, under tougher conditions than before,” O’Brien said. “It’s exactly the kind of result we wanted to be able to show people before asking them to consider it for their own home.”
