NHU unveiled the the new product Calcium D-Pantothenate, developed through collaboration with a third-party parner. This product brings a dual breakthrough in environmental benefits and economic advantages for customers, contributing significantly to achieving the dual-carbon goal.

In 1933, scientist R.J. Williams discovered a growth factor in yeast termed pantothenic acid, derived from the Greek word “pantos”, meaning ubiquitous. This compound, known as vitamin B5, plays a crucial role as a component of coenzyme A, aiding animals in effectively utilizing fats, carbohydrates, and proteins, converting food nutrients into energy. Additionally, it protects skin and mucous membranes, enhances hair or feather color, supports digestion and nutrient absorption, facilitates growth and development, prevents animal diseases, improves meat quality, and enhances reproductive performance.

In practical applications, vitamin B5, a significant feed additive, has found extensive usage in animal feed for various animals like poultry, pigs, young ruminants, and fish. As the farming sector evolves and consumer demands for higher food quality and safety increase, the significance of vitamin B5 in feed additives is expected to grow substantially.

Vitamin B5 is susceptible to damage from acid, alkali, and heat, and it has a viscous and oily nature that readily absorbs moisture. Due to these characteristics, it cannot be directly added into feed. Therefore, scientists and engineers convert it into calcium pantothenate. Once inside the body, calcium pantothenate releases pantothenic acid and calcium to participate in the metabolic cycle.

Currently, the primary industrial process for manufacturing calcium pantothenate relies on chemical synthesis, which entails multiple intermediates and a separation process. This production method demands stringent conditions, high energy consumption, and generates cyanide-containing wastewater, causing environmental pollution.

When obtained directly from plants and animals, the extraction rate is low, and the process faces challenges in maintaining consistent yield and quality due to environmental variables and the use of organic solvents, carrying the risk of impurity residue.

To address this problem, NHU has introduced technical expertise and leveraged the strengths of the “chemical+” and “biological+” platforms. By establishing an R&D team dedicated to overcoming technical hurdles, we have successfully achieved the production of vitamin B5 through bio-fermentation methods.

This innovative bio-based process uses renewable resources in microbial fermentation to produce calcium D-pantothenate directly, eliminating the need for resolution. This eco-friendly and one-step approach generates a product on par with natural sources, featuring high quality, stability, and compatibility, effectively prevending the degradation of amino acids, enzymes, oils, and other nutrients in feed. As a result, its absorption and utilization rates, as well as its relative biological efficiency, are notably high. NHU has achieved successful large-scale production of Calcium D-Pantothenate utilizing this method.
