Latin American real estate developer Miraval has announced new projects with social purpose.

The expansion to the Caribbean Coast of Colombia comes after the company – one of the first Europe-based real estate developers to incorporate sustainability into projects in the region – already delivered units to its Villanela build.

The new projects will be a mixed project with hotel units in the framework of sustainable tourism – keeping the urban model incorporated in Villanela.

Villanela is the first residential project by Miraval in Colombia for the middle-class population.

The company has recently received the FENALCO Solidario certification. FENALCO is the Colombian National Federation of Businesses, and the certification recognises the development and implementation for responsible practices, with a commitment to sustainability. It is comparable to the auditable SA8000 Standard by Social Accountability International.

Miraval received it for its work around three of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals: 8 (decent work and economic growth), 12 (responsible consumption and production) and 16 (promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development).

The social side of sustainability has been a key element for Miraval as it expands in Latin America and lays the foundation for a sustainable future for the company in the region, and for the region itself.

In Villanela, Miraval has focused on the health and well-being of the people in and around its development by creating green areas and sports facilities in our ecocities that nearby communities can access, and healthcare and educational projects for the same communities.

It is also building ecocities that have their own wastewater treatment plants, providing purified running water to communities. Considering that in a developing region like Latin America, there is immense importance in providing clean water and sanitation in urban settlements.

Miraval hopes to become the first LatAm-focused sustainable real estate company to be listed in Europe.
