Six intelligent dustbins were put into use at a local residential community in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province on March 23, local media outlets reported. They are the first of its kind in the province.

Equipped with infrared sensors, the dustbins can open their caps automatically when someone approaches to throw their trash away.

Each of the smart dustbins is connected to an underground bin. They can detect when the underground bin is nearly full and alert the management center.

There is currently one dustbin for recyclable waste, one for household food waste, one for hazardous water, and three for other types of waste.

Beneath the dustbins is a spray system for deodorization, a sanitary sewer system, a disinfection system, and a hydraulic system to reduce noise.

The dustbins are also equipped with an automatic fire extinguishing system, which will turn on when smog and excess temperatures are detected in the dustbins. A life detection instrument will also turn on when living creatures are thrown into the bins.

A few steps away from the dustbins is a sink where people can wash their hands.
