Grand Pointe Automotive Announces Early Summer Diagnostics Initiative for Vehicle Air Conditioning Systems

July 9, 2026 – Grand Pointe Automotive has launched a proactive car air conditioning service initiative designed to help drivers identify cooling system problems before peak summer temperatures arrive. The program addresses a recurring seasonal pattern: vehicle air conditioning systems that sit dormant through a Michigan winter often develop issues that surface during the first sustained heat of summer, by which point repair costs and shop wait times have typically increased.

Once temperatures climb, demand at auto repair shops throughout the region rises sharply. Vehicles with air conditioning systems that fail during this period generally require more extensive repairs and longer turnaround times than would have been necessary had the issue been identified earlier in the season.

Michigan winters affect vehicle air conditioning systems in ways that are not always apparent until damage has already occurred. When an air conditioning system goes unused for several months, the rubber seals and O-rings responsible for containing refrigerant can dry out and contract. This process can create a small leak that is difficult to detect during mild spring weather but becomes significant once summer driving conditions place greater demand on the system.

A system operating with low refrigerant places additional strain on the compressor, one of the most mechanically complex and costly components in an air conditioning system. A refrigerant leak that goes undetected in the spring can result in full compressor failure by mid-summer.

“The calls that come in during a heat wave are usually the most difficult ones to resolve quickly,” said a company spokesperson for Grand Pointe Automotive. “By the time a vehicle’s air conditioning fails, the compressor has often already been damaged. A pressure check earlier in the season is typically what catches the leak while the repair is still minor.”

The diagnostic evaluation included in the initiative covers several checkpoints used to determine whether a cooling system is prepared for summer conditions. Technicians check system pressures to evaluate refrigerant levels on both R-134a and R-1234yf refrigerant systems, perform leak detection to identify deteriorated seals before they cause compressor damage, and inspect the cabin air filter for restriction.

The cabin air filter step addresses a frequently overlooked factor in air conditioning performance. A clogged cabin air filter restricts airflow through the evaporator, requiring the system to work harder to produce the same level of cooling. This issue is sometimes mistaken for a refrigerant problem, though replacing a filter is a considerably simpler repair than a refrigerant recharge or compressor replacement.

Diagnostics under the initiative are performed using Robinair air conditioning equipment, which provides pressure readings and refrigerant recovery capability across the refrigerant types used in most vehicles currently on the road.

Grand Pointe Automotive has operated in the Grand Blanc Township area since its founding in October 1950. The shop’s 11-bay facility is equipped to manage increased service volume during peak summer months, and proactive scheduling is intended to reduce wait times as demand increases.

Repairs completed through the initiative are covered under Grand Pointe Automotive’s 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty. The initiative is part of a broader seasonal service push the shop is conducting across Genesee County, including the Grand Blanc, Burton, Flint, and Atlas areas, ahead of the region’s peak cooling-system service season.
