For more than fifteen years, Dr. Azzurra Missinato dedicated her career to science. She earned a PhD, worked in academic research, transitioned into the biotechnology industry, and contributed to developing therapies designed to improve lives.
Yet despite decades of higher education, she realized something that would ultimately change the course of her career.
No one had ever taught her how money truly works.
That realization became painfully clear while working for a biotechnology company whose compensation package included company stock options. When a clinical hold temporarily halted one of the company’s drug programs, investor confidence declined rapidly, causing the value of her stock compensation to fall dramatically in less than two weeks.
“It wasn’t poor performance or a bad decision,” Missinato explained. “It was concentrated market risk—something completely outside my control. I realized that after all my education, nobody had ever taught me how to protect the wealth I was building.”
That experience became the inspiration behind Mercury Legacy, the financial service firm she co-founded with Joseph Mubanga to help professionals build wealth through a different lens.
Today, Mercury Legacy specializes in helping scientists, biotech executives, physicians, researchers, entrepreneurs, and other high-income professionals understand ERFT—Eliminating Risk, Fees and Taxes—while introducing strategies centered on market downside protection, wealth preservation, executive compensation planning, and the tax-free side of finance.
The company believes professionals who spend decades mastering medicine, biotechnology, engineering, or science deserve financial strategies that are just as sophisticated as the careers they have built.
“Highly educated professionals often know everything about their field but very little about protecting the wealth they create,” said Joseph Mubanga, Co-Founder and CEO. “Our mission is to help them gain confidence by reducing unnecessary financial risk and building systems designed for long-term security.”
Mercury Legacy recently concluded its educational webinar series focused on helping professionals better understand personal finance, tax-efficient wealth strategies, and market risk. Although the live series has ended, the company has opened continued access through its private Volley community, where participants can watch webinar replays, receive ongoing education, ask questions, and connect with other growth-minded professionals committed to building lasting wealth.
“Scientists spend years learning how cells work. Engineers learn how systems work. Physicians learn how the human body works,” Missinato said. “Almost none of us were taught how money works. That has become my personal mission—to help brilliant people build financial confidence before life’s unexpected events make the lesson more expensive.”
Mercury Legacy is currently licensed in Washington, California, Illinois, Texas, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Maryland, Arizona, Florida, Indiana, and Ohio, with plans to serve clients in all 50 U.S. states by the end of 2026.
