Fifteen-year-old Erica Tambo is surrounded by disorder even before her mother drags her and her younger sister out of their Seattle suburb to live in the small eastern Washington hamlet of Leavenworth. Her mother made this poorly thought-out move in the hopes of starting an afresh chapter in her life. In this new town, though, things don’t go so well. She has difficulties meeting new friends and she cannot stand her younger sister! Despite this, she eventually gleans strength from adversity, putting forth her best effort no matter what life throws at her.

“Low Hanging Fruit” is an engrossing tale that effectively transports you back to the early 1980s. The novel is chock-full of historical connections and happenings that will keep readers engrossed with each turn of the page. Susan Johnson describes life in the 1980s as it was – something we can no longer experience since everything now feels so manufactured.  Even though there are many individuals involved,  the protagonist’s plot is brilliantly written;  she does not scrimp on details  (which make things more interesting).
