Dr. Kevin Borchard Surpasses Knee Replacement Benchmark Standards Established by Leading Medical Device Manufacturer Stryker Orthopaedics

The Colorado Advanced Orthopedics board-certified orthopedic surgeon continues to raise the bar for knee replacement surgery results.

MEEKER, CO – Aug 2, 2021 – Stryker Orthopaedics, owner of Mako SmartRobotics™, recently released Dr. Kevin Borchard’s first quarter 2021 total knee replacement surgery data, which demonstrates that he consistently achieves excellent outcomes with a low complication rate. Dr. Borchard is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with Colorado Advanced Orthopedics, a division of Pioneers Medical Center in Meeker, Colorado.

Dr. Borchard’s first quarter patient outcomes were compared to those of other surgeons in Stryker’s database. The data encompasses over 600,000 elective knee and hip surgeries from over 200 hospitals nationwide, including more than 40,000 cases performed with the Mako Robotic-Arm assisted technique used by Dr. Borchard. The Stryker data clearly demonstrates Dr. Borchard’s ability to deliver exceptional outcomes that rival the finest knee surgeons in the country.

Over the last three quarters, Dr. Borchard has decreased his Mako Robotic-Arm assisted surgery time by 21 minutes (15%). In addition, his patients’ length of stay following simultaneous bilateral total knee replacement surgery averaged 37 hours, consistently outperforming Stryker’s benchmark average.

Comparing Dr. Borchard’s results to those of other surgeons also revealed a variety of other areas where he is significantly outperforming Stryker’s benchmark standards:

Knee Replacement Outcome Dr. Borchard’s Results Stryker Benchmark
Patient readmissions to hospital following discharge (30 days) 0% 1.53%
Patient readmissions to hospital following discharge (90 days) 0% 2%
Patient emergency room admissions within 90 days of surgery 0% 5.25%
Distance walked (day of surgery) 393 ft. 135 ft.
Distance walked (at time of hospital discharge) 579 ft. 277 ft.
Ability to bend the knee joint after surgery 103 degrees 87 degrees

In addition, Dr. Borchard continues to maintain zero orthopedic surgical site infections, which is monitored and documented for 90 days after surgery and reported to the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN).

Josh Hardy, owner and physical therapist at Monument Physical Therapy in Grand Junction, regularly works with Dr. Borchard’s patients, and he has witnessed firsthand the exceptional outcomes achieved by Dr. Borchard. “I’ve routinely had Dr. Borchard’s patients eclipse 120 degrees of flexion within two weeks of their procedure. It has been truly remarkable,” Hardy said.

“The short amount of time using an assistive device coupled with rapid increases in range of motion ultimately allow the patient to return to their desired activities more quickly. In our rural mountain community, that means folks are able to get back to hiking and biking, or farming and ranching, more rapidly than previously possible. I recently had a patient just eight weeks post bilateral total knee arthroplasty tell me that he was able to climb into his tractor to mow his hayfield. I legitimately didn’t think that was possible,” Hardy added.

Dr. Borchard’s exceptional knee replacement outcomes reflect the dedication to quality medical care that marks the Pioneers Medical Center experience. With a team of Fellowship trained orthopedic surgeons, Colorado Advanced Orthopedics is able to raise the bar for healthcare throughout the White River Valley and Western Slope communities.

In addition to performing initial total knee replacement procedures, Dr. Borchard specializes in total knee arthroplasty revisions. He also regularly performs shoulder and hip replacement surgery, as well as shoulder arthroscopic surgery, including rotator cuff repairs.
