Marc Zboch Scholarship Announces 2020 Winner

February 23 05:54 2021

The Marc Zboch Scholarship program recently announced its winner for 2021. The $1,000 financial assistance is given to one deserving student who displays the core values of commitment, perseverance, and service to the community. The scholarship awardee is Katrina, a current freshman at Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe College in Hayward, Wisconsin. She is an incoming sophomore pursuing a degree in Human Service.

Just recently, the academic scholarship commenced and became open to U.S. college students and high school seniors who are currently accepted into any degree program. Founder Marc Zboch understands the struggles of many students when pursuing higher education. Earning a college degree can be a vital tool towards achieving a better state in life. The goal of the scholarship is to ease the financial burden that students face every semester when paying for tuition and materials needed for school.

After careful consideration, Katrina of Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe College won the scholarship program for the fall semester of 2021. A part of the scholarship application is an essay topic to be answered, “Tell us about a meaningful experience where you were able to help others?” Katrina shared her experience of volunteering in a refugee camp in Greece. “One of the most life-changing times in my life started in August of 2017. I was 20 years old and was struggling to find a calling and purpose for my life. Through random mutual friends, I ended up flying to the Island of Lesbos Greece, where I spent the next 1.5 years volunteering off and on in a refugee camp,” she mentioned.

Katrina went on to explain how humbling the experience has been for her, and how it changed her perspective about other people’s struggles. “It was here (refugee camp) that I met some of the most caring, kind, and giving people I could ever hope to meet,” she continued, “It was the hardest thing I had ever done. I realized then how sheltered I had been. Their stories and experiences have changed my life forever.”

The scholarship program believes that students can make an impact on communities that they choose to be a part of. By placing importance on education, the program hopes to inspire students to become leaders in their own right. Pursuing a college degree means that students can have the right knowledge, skills, and attitudes to make a change in the world. This year’s winner, Katrina, embodied the importance of showing compassion and using what we have to extend a helping hand, “They literally had no one in the world that cared for them. I think it is easy to put it in a box and say it is a 3rd world problem, but I see the same thing happening in America. There are so many people on their own who need to be seen and heard. I want to be in a career where I can interact with those who feel forgotten and show them love and compassion.”
