How Professional Sport Surfaces are Being Brought into the Home Arena

September 19 21:13 2019

Tennis is one of the oldest sports in the world, and when taking into account the profile of some of the sport’s top stars – and their earnings – it shows no signs of slowing down in its popularity, glamour and global show business appeal. For keen amateurs wanting to replicate the exciting to-and-fro freneticism of the professional game, there is only one way to do it and that is on an authentic and well-maintained court.

The demands of the modern game mean there is a diverse range of surfaces to choose from, and each top tennis star has their own preference. Finding comparable standards away from the profession is difficult, but with specialist knowledge and technical knowhow it is possible to bring the professional tennis court to the home.

CrowAll Surface Contractors is an Ontario-based specialist in building tennis courts and other sport surfaces., including in the grounds of homes. They are also the only company in the industry to use laser-guided grading, where optimized grading beams work to create a customized level playing surface that is built to last for at least 25 years.

CrowAll’s work includes carrying out installations, resurfacing and maintenance for a range of clay surfaces, such as Har-tru red and green clay and European clay. ClayTech is a low maintenance clay-based surface comprised of stone and/or brick, and combines low maintenance with all-weather performance. They can also install artificial grass and turf, which provides advantages over real grass in that it needs less maintenance and doesn’t damage as easily.

CrowAll also specialize in an asphalt penetration surface, which takes layers of stone and sand and sprays them with liquid asphalt. Requiring no maintenance, this type of surface replicates the hard-court experience but with a soft asphalt composition, which also provides a more comfortable landing to any impacts from a fall. But tennis isn’t the only sport represented in CrowAll’s work. The company also installs putting greens, ice rinks, and basketball and volleyball courts.

Sometimes it is existing surfaces that need some work to repair and restore them, especially during periods of harsh winters. CrowAll has partnered with Laykold to develop two products that possess superior acrylic latex coating: the Laykold NuSurf and ColorFlex Acrylic Paint System extend a court’s life by hiding and preventing fine to small surface cracks, and maintaining the speed and colour of the court for longer.

When constructing a tennis court, CrowAll can take care of all aspects, including the aesthetics – a full landscape plan and design, interlocking pathways, patios and retaining walls, professional drainage systems, and excavation, base install and fencing. They also take steps to minimise the risks from extreme weather and excessive moisture, such as cracking. Using laser-guided grading and top-level acrylic coating, CrowAll ensures maximum protection against the weather and general wear and tear.
