Cliff Waldman of Manufacturing Matters Podcast Explores Whether Production Offshoring Is Hurting U.S. Innovation Capacity

Cliff Waldman interviewed Sridhar Kota and Tom Mahoney, both of MForesight: Alliance for Manufacturing Foresight, to discuss their recent Wall Street Journal Op-ed, in which they argue that production offshoring by U.S. manufacturers is depleting the U.S. of critical innovation capacity. Listen to the Manufacturing Matters podcast here.

Kota and Mahoney discussed the global context for their arguments, specifically relating to the need for U.S. manufacturers to establish a foreign presence to sell into new and emerging markets, the value of a foreign multinational presence in the U.S., and complex multi-country supply chains. The interview concludes with a discussion of the authors’ policy recommendations for slowing the outflow of innovation from U.S. shores.

Kota is the Herrick Professor of Engineering, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan. He is the founding Director of MForesight: Alliance for Manufacturing Foresight – a federally-funded national think-and-do tank focused on accelerating technological innovation to enhance U.S. manufacturing competitiveness.

Mahoney has over 30 years of experience in the fields of industrial management, international competition, technology development and adoption, economic analysis, and entrepreneurship. His combination of economic expertise and hands-on business management skills have proven effective in providing strategic and technical advice to manufacturers and governments worldwide.
